The Magicians, the TV series, is based on the 2009 novel The Magicians by Lev Grossman. When it premiered in December of 2015 I was super excited because I had just happened to complete the book a few months prior. I admit it though, when I first watched The Magicians TV series, I was completely disappointed with it. The writing didn't do justice to the book. Too much artistic privilege taken with the plot, and the result was what seemed like a fan fiction of the original. A mere hollow shell of what appeared to be The Magicians on the surface, but was empty inside. Fast forward a year or so when the memories of details of the book are fading and there's a nagging desire to revisit the world of Eliot, Margo, Alice, Quentin, Julia and gang. Contains Spoilers, you have been warned. Russian Doll is a Netflix original dramady series starring Natasha Lyonne of Orange is the New Black fame. Consisting of eight episodes in the first production run, this Groundhog's Day-esque show moves from the wacky time loop reset/inevitable "FML"/flavor of the day death scene (I'm looking at you stairwell)/repeat cycle to character development that sees Nadia - our unlikely protagonist - exploring her life choices, friends, family, and most of all; her reason for being in this time loop. After powering through the rock bottom of cast aside relationships, more alcohol and drugs than could down an elephant, and general life chaos, Nadia's elevator death reveals she's apparently sharing her fate with another man - Alan - who is also experiencing the waking death loop himself; albeit his day is much different than hers.
